Movember 26th updates!
Hello all! A few updates today:
1. If you students want to order BLMS Lancer school clothing, order forms went home today. They are due back THIS FRIDAY NOVEMBER 30TH. It's a tight turn around, so I've attached the order form as well as the clothing options in case your student has misplaced theirs.
2. The December Scholastic order is due this Friday to ensure that books show up before the holiday break, so if you are wanting to order any books, please make sure that the order is in before Friday.
3. This week is spirit week. The days special events are as follows:
Monday: Wacky Hat/Hair day
Tuesday: Identical day (Dress as a twin, triplet, etc.)
Wednesday: Dress as something that ends in "er" day
Thursday: Wear clothing that clashes day.
ALSO: Thursday is our dance. Students need to be in attendance all day in order to attend. $10 Admission at the door. Doors open at 6:30. The dance goes until 10:00
Friday: Pajama Day
4. The BAND concert is coming up on Thursday, December 6th. More info to come on that from Mr. Swendsen
5. B Basketball is beginning this week. If your child is interested, boys practice tonight after school and girls practice tomorrow.
6. If there are any family trips that will cause students to leave early before the break, please let Ryan and I know as soon as possible so that if we are planning any events we can try to ensure that as many students as possible are able to be present for them.
7. In ELA we have just finished reading Wonder as a class. Take a moment to ask your child about it and what they thought. We are completing a Persuasive writing piece discussing courage in Wonder. Rough copies of this writing is due TOMORROW, Tuesday November 27th. We have had classtime to complete this today. Any students that don't finish in class should work to complete them at home tonight. We will complete our good copies in class on Wednesday, and then move on to our next unit of study: Mysteries and the Unexplained.
8. In Social Studies we have been engaging in Global Government Simulation where students have been running their own countries. We're taking a break from that now to move on and finish looking at mapping and location and move onto cultural contact.
9. In Performing Arts, Miss Dogniez, our intern, has been working with students on creating characters, writing scenes, and improvisation. Their final project for this unit will be to write and perform a 1 minute monologue.
That's all for now!

A Very Short Week
Okay! So this week we only have two days. Wednesday and Thursday are Professional Development days for LPSD staff, and Friday will be our Day in Lieu for parent teacher interviews.
Thank you to everyone who was able to make it out to interviews. I think it was very beneficial for all students, parents, and myself. It was great to see everyone and touch base on our goals for the next few months.
Many people had commented that they would love to have access to the blogs that we are working on, and I think we now have that ability. If you would like to visit your students blog, check out the kidblog site:
7-5: http://kidblog.org/Hyland75/
7-6: http://kidblog.org/Hyland76/
At the bottom of the list of names, you'll see "Parents". You can feel free to sign in, using the password: blms. Once you're signed in, you'll be able to read the blogs and comment on them! As there is only one generic parent account, if you're commenting on blogs, You will need to put your name in above the comment. It'll look like this:

We have another blogging challenge this week that will be due the Monday that students return from their 5 day weekends, so a little reminder will be helpful for them.
More to come, but that's it for right now!

Blogging, Global Sim and Interviews, Oh My!
Good day all! It's again another busy week. I hope that everyone enjoyed a restful and food-filled long weekend. Students just finished creating their "Cardboard Challenge" creations last week. 7-5 was interviewed by NewCap. Check out their promo video here on YouTube. We have been blogging about our experiences. Blogging Challenge #4 is due by the end of the day tomorrow.
In Social Studies today we began our Global Government Simulation, where students are dealing with the pressures and excitement of running one of the world's countries. We will explore a few sections of the Social curriculum through the Global Sim. We'll work on it on and off throughout the year as it connects to other things that we are doing in class.
Students have been handed back their Canada Maps with feedback on changes to make, as many expressed confusion with the expectations, as I was away while they worked on the maps. The changes are due back tomorrow, and I will re-mark the maps. I am expecting that all students should take the time to review my suggestions, make changes, and hand the maps back in. These map changes are due back tomorrow in class.
We finished our Common Formative Assessment writings in ELA, and will be reviewing them tomorrow in class. We will be working on developing the mechanics of our writing as well as backing up statements with facts and evidence.

A few other notes:
- This Wednesday is early dismissal. Students will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m..
- Interviews are Thursday October 11 and Tuesday October 16. We expect that students are at all interviews. If this doesn't work, please let us know so we can reschedule.
- OLIE (Outdoor Ed Club) members are going on their first camping trip of the year this weekend, leaving Friday after school and returning Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. We have an OLIE meeting Wednesday at 4:15-5:15, and a gear check Thursday at noon. All students must have their gear with them Thursday for the check.
- Start thinking about holiday plans: Reminder that there is no school on October 24-26, due to PD days for staff and a day in lieu due to interviews. Mr. Sklapsky and I will be sending out our gift requests for students taking holidays. (Just Joking).

Interviews, Cardboard Challenges, & more!
Hello everyone!
We're back in another week, and it is very exciting. Our class has ALMOST had everyone hand in their chocolate money, and that means that we are nearly there to win a giant 5 pound chocolate bar. We are also currently third in total chocolate sales, meaning that if we keep selling the way we are (a few students are well into their second and third cases sold), that we could win the Subway lunch party. Great work everyone! If you need more cases of chocolates to sell, just let me know!
Nextly, interviews are coming up. Our class interviews will be on Thursday October 11, and Tuesday October 16. For 7-5, I am test driving a new way of interview sign up. If you click on the button below, it will take you to a page where you can choose the date and time of your interview. It will ask you for your name and phone number, as well as your email address. This will all be kept confidential and not broadcast on the site. We are piloting the program, so there may be a few glitches, but I have heard good things about it, so hopefully it works. ***Note: Please make sure that your student is available when you sign up for a time slot. It is essential that the students are at the meetings, so all of us can discuss the year so far. It only takes a few moments to sign up for an interview time. Here's how:
If for some reason it doesn't work out for you, just contact me and I can set it up for you manually.
On Wednesday, we will be participating in a cardboard challenge. I have challenged students to create something useful, beautiful, or entertaining using cardboard, tape, and a few other supplies. IF you have connections to cardboard and can send it to school, it would be very much appreciated. If you would like me to come and pick it up from your home or business, send me an email: derek.hyland@lpsd.ca, and I'll arrange for it! If you're interested in seeing our inspiration for this challenge, check out the two videos at http://cainesarcade.com/.
Also in this update, On Wednesday, October 10th, 7-5 will be travelling to Lakeland College for a Tipi raising. More info on this will be sent out later in the week!
That's all for now! Enjoy your week!

Updates!
Good evening all!
A few updates for this week:
Picture day is Friday September 21. Make sure that everyone comes with their hair done. (I'll bring some extra Brylcreem and comb for the boys, just in case).
The Fall Dance is Thursday September 28. Tickets are $10 at the door. It will run from 6:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Our dances are always a lot of fun. If parents have some dance moves to show off, or just want to experience a middle school dance all over again, we are always looking for chaperones. Send me an email if you're interested, and I'll forward you to the right people.
This week we will be doing some Common Formative Assessments with all of the Grade 7s in ELA. These will be writing based and students will respond to a prompt. They will be used to give us some guidance as to where students are at, and to help us guide instruction. We will be doing another one near the end of the year, and it's also useful to use this as a guide to measure the growth between September and May.
We have started up our use of Edmodo and Kidblogs. Information about it should be in your Inbox. If you'd like to know more about it, as your child, or send me an email or phone call! We would LOVE to have you comment on our blogs! Our second blogging challenge is up, make sure to check my blog on the Kidblog page for the details.
All of the clubs have started to get rolling at Bishop. If you (students) have signed up for any clubs, make sure to listen to announcements to keep up to date with what is going on. (For example, Outdoor Ed club will meet Monday's after school, 3:15 - 4:45ish. Starting next week!)
I will be gone on Thursday for a WE Team (formerly Leadership) planning day & mini-conference, BUT you all will be in good hands with our sub.

Welcome to the class blog!
Good morning! Welcome to the class blog! This is where I post all of the REALLY important stuff that is going on in class. A few things for you to check out.
Across the top of the blog, are tabs that help you find things like the blog, a Resource page, a Links page and a calendar of events.
On the right hand side of the blog, you can SEARCH the blog for keywords you want, follow the blog via email (which all of you should do), and also scan through the old blog archives of posts.

The main part of the blog is what you're reading RIGHT now! It's where you'll find all of the updates of what we are working on in class, and all of the important information you will need (especially if you "misplace" one of the assignments or handouts).
Check out the blog often for new updates. If you Follow the blog as I recommended, you'll get an email when the blog is updated. THAT way, you ALWAYS will stay on top of what's happening in class. Even if you miss a few days because you're sick!
Stay tuned for more!

The First Day of School 2012
Well tomorrow is the first day of school. It's what we've been either building up to or avoiding all summer. I've spent the better part of the past two weeks at school, and I am excited for us to get started!
I'd like to start by welcoming everyone to the 7-56 team here at BLMS. You have all been hand picked for this team, and we are going to have a great year. I've put together a little welcome video for you. Check it out below.
We will be spending lots of time in the coming weeks getting to know each other, and getting everything sorted out. I just wanted to send an initial post to say hello, and that I'm really looking forward to classes starting!
See you all soon,
Mr. Hyland

It will involve True/False, Matching, and Multiple choice sections, as well as a Short Answer section. The two questions for the short answer have been given to the students, and are as follows:
- Explain why and how a nation can have power? Make reference to a minimum of 3 of the powers that a nation has and give detailed examples. (6 Marks)
- During Global Sim this year, you have used the power of your country to affect others, and you have been affected by other countries using their power on you. Describe a situation when you used your power, or were affected by the power of another country. Include in your description which FORM of power was used, which SOURCES of power and give evidence to back up what you say. (5 marks)
Students should consider these questions before the quiz so that they are better prepared to answer them.

Enjoy the weekend!

Literature Circles!
Great news! We are embarking on our Courage Unit, and will be participating in Literature Circles.
What are literature circles? Easy. Here's the plan.
What are literature circles? Easy. Here's the plan.
- You will be presented with options on which books are available, and rate your top three.
- Groups will be created by me based on your choices and availability of books.
- Books will be signed out to each of you. They are your responsibility to take excellent care of. If they come back in worse condition or are lost, it will be your responsibility to replace them.
- Each week you will have a role to complete and a specific number of pages to read. Please do not read ahead, as it can create problems with your group.
- You will receive one, and only one booklet with the roles to be completed. Do not lose this. You will need to turn this in at the end of the literature circle. It will be a part of your final mark.
- In class you will have time to read and prepare your role. The number of pages to read will depend on the book that you have chosen. There will be necessary homework time to read and prepare your roles. Please plan to be spending time in the evening on this.
- During Literature Circle meeting time, you will share your roles with your group and discuss the book.
- One group will share their literature circle in front of the class during each discussion period. You will be evaluated on your participation with the group, understanding of the text, and completion of your role. It will be a part of your final mark. Other groups will engage in their discussions after this.
- If you complete your reading early in class, there will be a creative project option. More on this will be discussed in class and posted to this site soon.
Alright! Ready to go? Check out the list of possible books and vote for your choices by going to http://mrhyland.wikispaces.com/The+Novels. Read through the options, and then go to this site to vote for your favourite choices!

Cogneeto, Global Impact, Grade 8 Registration and more!
Good morning everyone! Here are some updates about what is going on.
We are going to be piloting a new program called "Cogneeto". ( http://cogneeto.ca ) This is an online program which allows for students to create projects, offer feedback to one another, revise their own work, and eventually hand in their finished copy. We're going to be doing some testing this week to see how it works, and hopefully will be using it for our next project in ELA.
Students are working on a quick intro assignment using Cogneeto. They should have access to this on any computer with Internet access. The first part is two paragraphs, which need to be completed by tonight. Many students finished during class, but there is still a number that need to complete this tonight.
A note about Cogneeto: It seems to work best in Google Chrome. If you need to download Chrome, you can find it here: https://www.google.com/chrome
Global Impact Projects are now overdue. Students who have not completed this project can expect to be spending lunch hours with me until they are done.
Grade 8 registrations have gone home today! Please make sure that you read over all the information on your child's form. Check that everything is filled in correctly, and that they have chosen band or PA correctly, and sign the bottom. These forms are due Tuesday April 24th. Note that if you are interested in hockey academy, that you should just write that in on the form.
Thanks to all of the students for their patience while I was gone this week due to my wedding! We're back on track now, and ready to rock our way through the last few months of classes.

Easter is upon us...An Update
A few updates just before we go to break.
Report cards go home today. Make sure that you receive both the report card AND the behaviour report.
In ELA students have been working hard to complete their Global Impact Project. We will probably need the help of parents to spread our messages of environmental conservation to the community of Lloydminster and the world. Some students have elected to send pamphlets out into the community, some letters to companies and magazines, some have produced videos that we will be sending out into the world via YouTube. I will be posting a gallery of our work here on the blog. I thank you ahead of time for helping your students to push their messages & research into the larger community.
Upon our return, we will be partaking in a bit of a writing bootcamp, followed by an exciting project, where we will be doing some creative writing and hopefully be publishing our own books! Stay tuned for more info.
In Social we've been wrapping up some exciting rounds of our Global Government Simulation. When we get back from break we will be starting our Resource Investing project, which will end off our Resources & Wealth unit. We'll take a week or two to complete that project, and then we'll be switching gears to examine Power and Government.
In Performing Arts we have wrapped up our monologue presentations, and they were AWESOME! I am looking for a collection of volunteers to perform their monologues in front of a camera and a plain white background. We would like to screen a selection of monologue artists at our Art Night in May. If you're interested, PLEASE let me know! We'll be launching into a full out film review when we return, and then moving into an examination of Radio Plays and creating our own.
Lastly, I will likely be out of communication over the break, as I will be getting married. I will be back the Thursday following the break, and I do so look forward to hearing from the students about their adventures over break, and sharing with them stories of my own.
Take care, and have a wonderful Easter!

- Colours
- How much it is.
- Need vs Want
- Threaten people

Social: Resources Essential Vocabulary
Good day all! As you are well aware I'm sure, this week we are finishing up on the basic knowledge of our social Resources & Wealth unit before we begin our project. We are going to be participating in team challenges this week, as well as write a quiz on Thursday. On the quiz, students will need to be able to define the following terms. I've provided the definitions in case students have misplaced their versions.
Today we will update our notes with the work (and homework) you did yesterday to ensure that we are all on the same page. I will update this post when we have the definitions completed.
1. Barter - The exchange of goods or services for other goods or services without the exchange of money. Also could include the act of debating the price of those goods.
2. Trade - The exchange or buying and selling of goods and
services in a market.
3. Economy - The wealth and resources of a region or country, including the production and consumption of goods and services.
4. Wealth - Accumulated goods, possessions, or riches.
5. Natural Resources - The raw materials or components of a finished product that are provided by the earth.
6. Renewable Resources - A resource that replaces itself if carefully
managed.
7. Non-Renewable Resources - A resource, such as oil or gas, that cannot be replaced once it is used up.
8. Supply & Demand - We call our needs the DEMAND, and natural resources are the SUPPLY. Higher demand and lower supply equals higher prices.
9. Steward - A person who cares for the land or for other
people.
10. Environmental Stewardship - Careful management of resources to ensure that they are sustainable.
11. Sustainability - An approach to development, economics, or
society that considers the environment and tries to avoid wasting or using up
natural resources, so that future generations will be able to meet their needs.

Boy in the Striped Pajamas
In class we have just finished watching The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This film causes us to think about a few very important issues:
Please consider these questions and answer them in complete sentences.
Innocence
-
The essence of true friendship
-
The courage to engage in humane actions
-
The uses and abuses of obedience and conformity
-
The development and consequences of prejudice and discrimination
Innocence
- What do “innocent” and mean when used to describe children?
- Does Bruno and Gretel’s tutor take advantage of the children’s innocence in what he teaches them? How? What were these ideas?
- Although Bruno and his family have moved to a desolate place, Bruno continues to display his strong sense of adventure and creativity. What are some examples of this in the movie? Can you give an example from your own life when your sense of adventure and imagination allowed you to escape from a sad or painful situation?
- Why was it so hard for him to believe that his father could be involved in hurtful acts?
Friendship
- Why do you think Bruno and Shmuel become friends and stay friends?
- The barbed wire fence is a physical separation between Bruno and Shmuel. What other types of separation does the fence represent in this story?
Obedience & Conformity
- How is obedience constructive and how can it be destructive? Give examples from the story of each.
- When are some examples in history when obedience or disobedience have been constructive or destructive?
Prejudice & Discrimination
- Have you ever been discriminated against? When have you witnessed discrimination against other people or discriminated against someone else?
- When Bruno first finds out that Shmuel is Jewish, he says: “You’re a Jew. You can’t be. I think I should go now.” Why does Bruno react that way at first?
Final Questions
- When you hear someone make a biased comment about a group of people, what do you usu- ally do? How hard is it to stand up to prejudice and discrimination? Why?
- What do you think causes people to treat others in such horrific ways as was done during the Holocaust? Are there people being treated like this anywhere in the world today? What is or can be done to stop it?
These questions are based on a discussion guide produced by the FILM Project with Harriet S. Mosatche, Ph.D.
